We should develop a strong relationship with history because we see how history continually repeats itself in human nature. For example, how many of us trust our government? Who thinks the Ukrainian Crisis is taking a page out of history from World War II? A prediction was made to me that Putin would have some attempts made on his life. Probably so. Let’s look at history for a moment to see how this has played out in the past:
If Hitler didn’t trust you, you were gone.
Among those executed were 3 field marshals, 19 generals, 26 colonels, 2 ambassadors, 7 diplomats, 1 minister, and 3 secretaries of state, as well as the head of the Berlin police. Adolf Hitler had at least 42 attempts on his life. He was far from holding the world’s record for having his life threatened. Fidel Castro holds the record of 638 attempts on his life. It is risky business holding a government office because some people don’t like what you do.
Another movement that sprang up during World War II was the Confessing Church This was a German movement for revival within the German Protestant churches that developed during the 1930s from their resistance to Adolf Hitler's attempt to make the churches an instrument of National Socialist (Nazi) propaganda and politics. They organized because of the movement of the Nazis to nationalize the churches in Germany:
the removal of all pastors unsympathetic with National Socialism
the expulsion of members of Jewish descent, who might be arrogated to a separate church
the implementation of the Aryan Paragraph church-wide
the removal of the Old Testament from the Bible
the removal of ‘non-German’ elements from religious services
the adoption of a more ‘heroic’ and ‘positive’ interpretation of Jesus, who in pro-Aryan fashion, should be portrayed to be battling mightily against corrupt Jewish influences
Trust in your government? Trust in the movements of social change? Trust in the emphasis in some churches where they are incorporating the immoral support for transgenderism and gay relationships? Trust in our institutions is slowly eroding in our society because many of them have been highjacked by the thinking that is contrary to the Scriptures.
There are too many scandals and improprieties that get exposed today which can make it hard to trust in anything. In my own life, I find it difficult to keep myself from developing an attitude of mistrust about the dishonesty I encounter every day. Recently, an older clergyman lied directly to my face because it served his purpose. Some are not aware of how their lack of honest communication develops mistrust. Honesty and honor go together as values. Christ instills honesty and honor into us from the Scriptures. Let me show you some great examples from the writings of the Apostle Paul on how these two values play out in a believer’s life:
Colossians 3 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Honesty and honor go together to build a foundation of trust. Our institutions have lost these character traits along the way and instead, have agendas of change which will end in the suppression of people by removing their liberty and freedom … similar to the history of World War II.
You become what you associate yourself with … that also applies to what you allow into your mind and heart. For example, the stories in the news influence our mode of thinking. I spoke to a friend whose heart is anxious because of what is happening in Europe and Ukraine. We need to be aware of world events, but we get our source of interpreting world events by what God says about Himself … and then putting our trust in Him. God is in control of evil … He has not been dethroned by the political unrest and all the rhetoric coming from our institutions. He is allowing us to be tested and show us that human beings without God will resort to evil tactics that rob, kill, and destroy.
Nothing surprises God. He is always aware of what is happening in your life, and the lives of billions of people in the world today. It is hard for us to fathom that, but that is why He is God … and we are not.
Who do you trust?
It is quite simple, we put all our questions and concerns into one package and say, “God in you I do trust.”
Psalm 9:10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
